Summer comfort
Why can a house overheat in summer?
A well-insulated home can still overheat when sunlight and internal heat build up faster than the home can shed them. Insulation slows heat transfer in both directions; shading and heat removal still matter.
What changes indoor heat
- Solar gains through glazing, especially with weak external shading.
- Heat from people, appliances and lighting.
- Warm outdoor air and nights that provide little cooling opportunity.
- The timing of ventilation, window opening and active cooling.
Compare the same home
Start with one envelope and weather file. Compare shading or ventilation settings, then add supported cooling if needed. Read the temperature timeline alongside energy use so a lower bill is not mistaken for better comfort.
